Parts of a Stethoscope

Understand the essential components that make up a stethoscope and how they function.

Introduction

A stethoscope may appear simple, but its design is a combination of thoughtful acoustics and ergonomic engineering. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced medical professional, knowing each part helps improve both your technique and diagnostic accuracy.

Key Parts of a Stethoscope

Here’s a breakdown of the main components and what they do:

1. Chest Piece

The chest piece is the part placed against the patient’s body. It typically includes two sides:

  • Diaphragm – The larger, flat side is used for high-frequency sounds like heartbeats or breath sounds.
  • Bell – The smaller, concave side is used for low-frequency sounds like certain heart murmurs.
  • Some stethoscopes (like dual-head models) have both diaphragm and bell, while others have a tunable diaphragm that combines both.
Revival Example:

Revival® Dual Head Stethoscope – Features both bell and diaphragm for full-range auscultation.

2. Stem

The stem connects the chest piece to the tubing. It often allows rotation to switch between the diaphragm and bell (in dual-head models).

3. Tubing

This is the flexible rubber or PVC part that transmits sound from the chest piece to the earpieces.

Key features to look for:

  • Thicker tubing = better sound insulation
  • Latex-free materials for skin safety
  • Durability for daily wear and tear
Revival Advantage:

Our tubing is designed for Indian conditions, offering flexibility and long-lasting acoustic performance in high-use environments.

4. Headset

This includes the binaural tubes (metal tubes connecting to the ear tips) and the spring mechanism that holds them together.

  • Made of stainless steel or aluminium
  • Angled anatomically for proper ear insertion

5. Ear Tips

These soft, snug-fitting tips sit in your ears to deliver sound. High-quality ear tips provide comfort and seal out ambient noise.

Look for:
  • Soft silicone or rubber material
  • Replaceable designs
  • Different sizes for fit customization
Revival Feature:

All our stethoscopes, including the Revival® Acoustic comes with comfortable ear tips designed for long hours of clinical use.
